Poor BP. Are those mean old fishermen still picking on them for poisoning the water. I just hope BP is able to find some lawyers and money to sue those bad Americans.
Hey, Duh, answer this: why only specific species of birds and fish? If it's gobal warming (which it ain't), the deaths would be across the board in all species of birds and fish, not just redwinged blackbirds and drum fish. Ditto for fracking, it would affect all species, not just two.
Something is rotten in the state of .....Arkansas? Let's see if it hits elsewhere.
Durn! I photograph a lot of songbirds, especially the redwings. I get a chuckle out of making the territorial sounds that the males make in the spring. They go all over the place looking for that invading male.
nature will be doing the cleanup. "We'll have raccoon and birds and things like that will take care of it so there is really no cleanup, it's really too big.
I just want to know who is going to be cleaning up all the dead birds and raccoons after they eat the dead fish and die.
Fracking may well be a cause of some, possibly many problems. It is unlikely to have killed only one species of fish.
Unless of course that species of fish is highly sensitive to a particular toxin the may have leached into the water as a result of nearby fracking... and if so... can we find out what it is and start manufacturing that chemical to dump in other rivers? Maybe we can get rid of the asian carp infestation, or at the very least get rid of those dumb drum.
This is due to the mysterious effects of the "Arkansas Triangle". It encompasses, roughly, the area from Mountain Home to West Memphis to Mena and then back again to Mountain Home. Probably some airplanes and fishing boats will disappear next.
Fracking is when you pump usually diesel and other CRAP into deep wells in order to build up pressure so that more oil comes to the surface. Look it up... It basically means that you poison ground water so that your company can make more money.
The birds were all redwinged blackbirds. Blackbirds (that includes grackles, starlings, and crows) form huge flocks during the winter months. Its both protective and advantageous in finding food. I would like to know what the weather was like during the 12-24 hours before the discovery of the dead birds. Articles Ive read said that there were no dead redwings under thier roosting area, so the birds that were dead - died while flying. I suspect weather. Hail, most likely. I doubt it was fireworks - thats alot of dead birds for some random fireworks. Some people ask wouldnt other birds be dead too? No, birds of a feather flock together. Thats not just something your parents would say about your friends. They really DO stick to thier own kind in flocking behavior. So it was a big flock of redwings that collided with something... or rather, some things collided with the flock...
As for the fish, fishkills (large numbers of dead fish in a short time span) are common. Disease can wipe out fish - but something - some spike in a parameter of the water could have caused this too. Even a rush of warm water can kill off fish - by shock in sudden water temp change. Not all fish would necessarily be affected the same. Carp can survive just about anything. Some fish are more hardy than others. I suspect it was exactly as reported, an epidemic of disease in that fish population.
I don't believe in coincidence...............it would seem a specific bird species (one that was in huge abundance and would not cause a ripple in the area if they were decimated) was targeted and a specific fish species (one also, that would not cause any concern to the environment or the financial stability in the area) was targeted.............................guess chemical warfare is getting very precise. When all else is ruled out..the obvious, though perhaps seemingly unbelievable, is the answer...........
it seems odd that there is not more concern and more testing and more protection of local inhabitants (it is ok to fish for ALL other fish?...........please.)....................why aren't officials tearing through this looking for answers?......why have they ok'd fishing for all other species for public consumption?..................why isn't the FBI weighing in on this?..................guess they have to wait for blond haired blue eyed left handed math oriented people to all drop dead in this little Arkansas town.
This smacks of a cover up................................................we will never get answers and this will just go away...........just you watch.
We are expendable when it comes to making a profit for some big powerful corporation.......and everyone is always looking for the next generation warfare tool.
Hey, why isn't homeland security looking into this...................terrorist attack?...............a test run before you use it on a bigger target?...................why isn't this setting alarms in peoples heads?.............................
Hey, why isn't homeland security looking into this...................terrorist attack?...............a test run before you use it on a bigger target?...................why isn't this setting alarms in peoples heads?.............................
And how do you know their not? It seems you have a lot of heresay from a small article. Just because no one is saying anything you want to hear, doesn't mean nothing is going on behind the scenes. Calm down, take a breath and see what happens.
As an environmental scientist I can assure you there's a lot going on that for good reason they're not ready to report out on. Chill. It's coming.
It'll be OK Deb, just put your tinfoil hat back on, click your heels three times and you'll be magically whisked away to the closet. Unless of course the 'Boogie Man' lives in the closet then I guess your just screwed like the rest of us.
Fracking does not pump diesel into a well head. Give me a break. They pump water down.
It's true that diesel isn't pumped into the well-head but it is one of the components of the fracking fluid. Ironically, diesel was excluded from the exemptions to the Clean Water Act provided by that great patriot and American Dick Cheney. But since, in particular Halliburton, they're holding their ground on disclosure we're not supposed to know about the diesel being used.
And, I'm not quite sure how hydrofracking came up in regards to this other than the opening post attributed this to hydrofracking, whether facetiously or not. More concerning to me is the fish, the birds and the recently revived contrail vs chemtrail/atmospheric seeding controversy. As Debbie hinted at #1.31 one rare occurence, the birds, ok, then the fish, more than just one rare occurence, all the rest of the crap going on? Coincidence? Not buying it. Call me a conspiracy theory nut all you want but I've got nothing to loose in being concerned. However, I do, and you've all got a sheeeitload to loose in turning a blind eye and blathering lalalalalalal conspiracy nut over the unexplained. And count on it, the first defense of anyone who's responsible, if there is anyone, because I'm not claiming that there definitely is something fishy, haha, fishy going on as fact, but if there is the first defense will be the economy. One way or the other the economy will be the justification.
Two of the world's largest oil-field services companies have acknowledged to Congress that they used diesel in hydraulic fracturing after telling federal regulators they would stop injecting the fuel near underground water supplies.
"Halliburton and BJ Services have admitted to using diesel in hydraulic fracturing, after telling federal regulators they would cease the activity near groundwater water supplies. Halliburton reported using fracking mixtures containing diesel from 2005-2007 to fracture gas and oil wells in 15 states. Halliburton used over 807,000 gallons of seven diesel-based fluids over three years."
www.shortnews.com/start.cfm?id=83344
"Something like three-quarters of the frack fluid stays in the earth, but that which flows back has acquired additional toxins such as salts, xylene, benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, heavy metals, and naturally occurring radioactive material usually consisting of radium isotopes—bone-seeking carcinogens.
I googled hydraulic fracturing and came away with this tidbit. "One hazard that is commonly overlooked is the venting of bulk sand silos directly to atmosphere. When they are being filled, or emptied during the fracture a fine cloud of silica particulate will be venting directly to atmosphere. This dust has the potential to travel many kilometers on the wind directly into populated areas." I wonder if that the venting could kill birds and poison fish? I wonder what the long term effects would be on humans in the area?
interesting thought.........but why only one species of bird and fish when so many others live in the area of the occurrence?
specific species.................more like targeting.
and why are the wild life people so sure that all other fish are OK to fish and eat?
this is too weird for a simple......oh they ran into each other in mid air answer..............won't be surprised if this happens else where............testing is usually done in different environments.
Regarding fracking, I never came across anything regarding sand silo venting but it certainly makes senses. I just assumed all along the sand was put in a pile or something. Anyways, what concerns me more when speaking of air quality is the practice of cleaning the frack water by using misting ponds. Sure, get the volatiles out of the water so it's easier to dispose of at the expense of air quality. Yeah, I know, not really anything to do with the bird kill but just something I wanted to bring up while there seemed to be some folks willing to listen.
Yes, yuck it up. The sheer idiocy of a lot of posters is confounding! So tongue-in-cheeky! I bet you think you sound cool...
Do some research for God's sake. Whenever any species demonstrates such massive die off, it's cause for concern. And you can believe, the root of this problem is human error / ignorance.
Without any doubt, this will spark controversy all around, but it's likely coinicidence. Tornadic effects, storm aftermath so far appears to be what downed the black birds.
This? Waiting for the results, and looking into the location, researching what dumps into the river, etc... but seems to be non-connected.
Some may not particularly believe in it, but at times, Murphy's law does apply...
I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city, as well.
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. The birds eat the fish, they fall out of the sky dead. Raccoons and other animals that eat the fish and the birds - will they die too?
Hey c'mon now... why all the hate for Arkies? You know they invented the toothbrush right? If it had been invented anywhere else it'd be called a teethbrush.
Flatlanders are like the drum, they are bottom feeders too....
You, do realize that the Ozark Mountains run through Arkansas, right? Hillbilly it is, but flat it ain't. They don't call them hillbillies because there are no hills around, y'know.
the most worrying thing about this story is the governments reluctance to clean up the dead fish. i like how they kinda tucked in there that there were other types of fish that where in the mix as well which to me kinda rules out the whole disease theory. if it was an epidemic within the drum fish poulation it would have been 100% drum fish. the pure and simple fact is what are they so worried about that they wont go near the site save to gather a few specimens for study. if they ever actually even did that. they said it would take a month to study the fish, more like a month to sweep it out of everyones minds. did anyone watch the video accompaning the bird story/ did anyone notice the government worker 9dont know if it was epa or game and fish) dressed in full out hazmat gear? the guy even had a gas mask on. the video of clean up on cnn showed the locals and they wore nothing more than work gloves.
Two things come to my mind. With the economy in the shambles it's still in I don't expect any slowdown in the moonshine industry. And, with the end so near, whatever happens there will be survivors who will need to get their hootch somewhere. Let's just hope that there are experienced shiners amongst the survivors. For the survivor's sake of course, I don't expect to be one any more than I expect to win the mega millions tonight..
I somehow think that the description of fish dying in Revelation isn't limited to Arkansas. Now, if you hear about this happening world-wide, I'd advise you go straight out and buy a Bible.
That is actually in the book of Revelations...but its not supposed to happen till the tribulation...after Jesus comes back and the Christians are taken in the rapture. Its says a 3rd of fish will die and a 3rd of birds also.
NO...not that many at once.....something KILLED them...as well as the birds which weren't poisoned, but rather died of massive internal trauma.....(early autopsies stated their insides looked like they'd been bounced around in a dryer).
as well as the birds which weren't poisoned, but rather died of massive internal trauma.....(early autopsies stated their insides looked like they'd been bounced around in a dryer).
5000 birds hit a massive invisible window in the sky? I don't think so. It was poison that destroyed their organs.
Hey, what do I know though? I'm no self-proclaimed expert at anything. There are though, a couple of things that I know a sheeitload more about than just about anybody, but I'm not even divulging any clues as to what it might be. It's my edge. My close friends already know, but it's not like I'm going to give away any clues to a potential 7 billion usurpers.
I don't think they pay that much for male on male adult movies these days Stand, but you could still make millions. LOL!
The birds, if they were poisoned, would not have all dropped in the same location. They would have been spread out in many directions. Plus if they were poisoned they would have known they were dying and saught a secluded place. Birds like most animals want to die alone. Maybe it was the aliens.
Did anyone ever think that the dead birds may have ate some of the dead fish? I mean the fish were found one day before the birds. Makes sense to me unless Black Birds don't eat dead fish (I really dont know what they eat)
I believe the preliminary studied indicate that the birds suffered some kind of trauma. So, I guess we will just have to wait for awhile. In any event tis a puzzlement
Actually those birds slammed into a cloaked alien spaceship..lol
The theory the birds ate the dead fish sounds more like it...125 miles isnt far for flocks of birds flying...and blackbirds do eat roadkill, includes dead fish....even parakeets will eat meat such as chicken. also what about the military germ warfare plant not far from there?
They'll be letting raccoons and birds do the cleanup? Of 100,000 dead fish that died of no known cause??? Are they morons? Who's to say those birds that fell out of the sky didn't die from eating these fish? 120 miles isn't that far for a bird to cover. Suppose it's a disease that can be transmitted to raccoons that then go and bite people? Or some kind of extremely toxic sludge that was dumped in that river and accumulated on the bottom where these fish feed? There's something really wrong with this picture if they're still letting people fish in that river without knowing what happened.
to josh strike: so far yours is the only comment that makes perfect sense. look for some kind of toxic emmission release of benzene, atrocine toxic sludge with mercury or lead, arsenic. they need to close the river to fishing and take precautions. why should the raccoons and other birds have to die too, clean up the fish if you are not sure what cause the massive die-off. i don't believe this is from disease, that is what the "official" said about the birds too. B.S.
I think somebody else already covered the birds -- the ones that died don't eat fish. But the fact that drum fish are bottom-feeders lends itself to your argument about toxic sludge. I'm thinking that something "unusual" happened at a nearby plant (maybe the paper mill) and discharged something nasty into both the water and the air. The only evidence against is that catfish are also bottom-feeders, can be found in the same river, and didn't seem to be dying in large quantities. However, catfish do not form large schools like drum fish do.
You know, do you honestly think they can stop other animals from eating the dead fish? Oh, and blackbirds don't eat fish!!!!! Also, catfish are bottom feeders. Any catfish with the drum fish on the shores???
Josh - you beat me to it. That's exactly what I was going to say! It may be a big job to clean up the fish, but they should do it - and find out how and why they died before allowing all of nature to consume them, and spread the disease along the food chain. Hello! Common sense!
Same with the birds. Dogs will eat anything. I wouldn't want my dog eating a bird that fell dead from the sky. And in rural areas, pet dogs run free, eat what they find and go home to lick their family's faces! Ugh! Someone needs to figure out what's killing these animals before there's a ripple effect on wildlife, pets and people.
Red wing black birds are strictly grain and seed eaters. They do NOT eat fish. Buzzards, crows, ravens that live in the area are excellent scavengers though so if the fish have something dangerous- look for those birds to start dying off.
Maybe they don't eat fish but do they drink water occasionally? Maybe they drank near all those dead fish.
I'd like to add my voice to others in saying I find it pretty idiotic "they" are saying "they're" sure it is NOT pollutants, but "they" aren't sure just what it is.
Suppose it's a disease that can be transmitted to raccoons that then go and bite people?
Despite the obvious fallacies in the rest of your post... this bit is absolutely hillarious... If every raccoon in arkansas carried a deadly disease, then... well then things would be just as they already are because every raccoon in Ark. already carries rabies. But it's incredibly rare for anyone to get bit by raccoons... unless of course, you're this guy (and I hesitate to even call him a guy):
OK, Josh, tell you what--Why don't you go there and stop all those raccoons from eating the fish, then get back to us, 'kay? If you have any fingers left, that is!
"About 75% of the annual Red-winged Blackbird diet is seeds. During the breeding season, they also eat insects, especially dragonflies, mayflies, and caddis flies as they emerge from their aquatic larval stage. In winter, grain is an important source of food, and many birds feed on corn stubble and at feedlots."
OMG I waz reading thinking the same thing how foolish does this sound?????? Really I understand it may be quite an extensive job to clean up but if they are uncertain as to what killed them why allow the other animals to "clean it up" now if all the little forest animals start dissappearing we will know why and who is going to clean that up?????????????/
I TOTALLY agree with you! This is SO messed up. I dont mean to be funny, Im being serious....are all these "natural disasters" leading us to "doomsday"?? There seems to be no other answer. If not, then Im starting believe that maybe these bird/fish deaths are terrorist related and our government doesnt want mass panic so they are saying barely anything about what really is a MASS DEATH tragedy and could potentially hurt humans...I mean like, what if the birdsd were first, then they tried adding alittle more of their chemical/biological substance and it killed fish and now what?? add enuff to kill dogs/cats next? or humans??? ***Thinking its a conspiracy*** The government is hiding the truth from us!
Look if it was poison or contamination all species would die. Not just drum. It is a disease plain and simple. This occurs more often than most people know. The sheer size is alarming, but drum are carp and they reproduce pretty heavily.
Look if it was poison or contamination all species would die
Not necessarily. As has been pointed out numberous times, some species of animals are more sensitive to certain toxins than others are. It may be a toxin that drum are highly sensitive to that other species of fish are not as sensitive to.
Highly unlikely. Especially in a river that contains a multitude of other fish in the same family with similiar genes, but I concede you do have a point worth looking into Zip2.
soooo, u r saying that only 1 type of bird ate those fish....hummmmm that woud be odd....i guess....but i would think that ALL types of birds would eat dead fish.....more than 1 type of bird would be "falling" out of the sky
No, not you. Why would anyone ban you. Besides I don't report people for those kind of things. Unless it makes me laugh so hard hot coffee comes out my nose. In which case I might out of anger for making me laugh at an inappropriate time. LOL!
Might as well, but you know we are still gonna be on different sides often. Just let it be known that no matter how much we disagree, we can agree to be friends. NOW, let the games begin!
That would be correct Stand up, you guys are not going to like what I say, but we are going to treat each other with as much respect and dignity as possible while defending our points of view. I like the way that sounds. I am okay with being proven wrong. I have been wrong for almost eleven years now on a daily basis and I don't believe that I will ever divorce my beautiful wife, so that is not going to change.
I don't know, maybe because he thinks these are events that point toward the end of time described in the Bible. Just a shot in the dark, but I bet I am pretty close.
I don't believe you have an idea about how big this river is and how many fish 80-100k would be. I have a home in southeastern Oklahoma and I know those rivers.
If it was a pollutant all fish would be dead. Not just drums.
There is something "Deliverancish" about some of your wild suppositions. Shaking head.
Why no mention of man-made global warming as a possible cause? Isn't that pretty much standard practice on any sort of natural disaster these days?
Unless the climate can be said to have caused whatever did this, no. When scientists make a hypothesis like that, it requires some plausibility. If they want to keep the respect of their peers and their funding.
I understand you are trying to make a smart-ass comment about global warming, Mr. Denier, but fluffing up weak-ass strawmen is not going to make GW denial a more respectable enterprise.
It's all a conspiracy, ask Jessie Ventura! Ha! Great, here they come now, all the conspiracy theorists. Mark my words! It's the government at the bottom of all this! Can't you aready hear them? They're coming.........
WTF! The only thing I can imagine, being Arkansas, is retribution from The Man upstairs for a guy who committed two horrendous lies. #1. " I did NOT have sex with that woman. #2...and this one really ticked me off..."Yeah, I smoked pot but didn't inhale."
Plagues and pestilence for bald-faced lies. LMAO! Someone have a doob?
Are we talking about lies from public figures, or is retribution in store for the lies of private citizens? Because there's not a state safe from dead birds and fish if that's the case!
Well JustForStarters - you're free to think that, but Linda may well be right on the money.
Take a good look at China. That is what you would get for lack of regulations. The pollution there is so thick you can almost write your name in the air.
LInda's post is idiotic because she states that "Conservative Republicans continue to destroy God's creation"...insinuating that what?....Progressive liberals do not? LOLOLOL!!
In reality, the vast majority of humanity has destoryed "God's creation" since the beginning of time! Only a libtard like Linda would blame one segment of the population for an occurrence which they, themselves, cannot explain! But then again, it's likely the Republican's fault for any 'wrath' that Mother Nature bestows upon the earth....(right, Linda?)
I have to assume that you do not have any plastics or chemicals in your home and you do not drive a car or ride a bicycle and you live in a sod hut with no electricity and use a outhouse.
to presume this is "disease" and not toxic pollution is criminal. i think the "officials" are lying like rugs. and of course the cooperative, colluding, collaborating news media just buys it, hook line and sinker. investigate thouroughly msnbc if you have any morals left at all!
Actually disease is a pretty safe assumption since this is species-specific. You can bet their first task was to catch some catfish in the area - since catfish are like water-quality barometers. The primary suspect is probably nematodes, but in this case I wouldn't be surprised if this was a local virus mutation since drum congregate in tight schools and the damage seems highly specific to one species and local area.
It might actually be better if it was pollution because then it would be an isolated event. A new virus mutation, on the other hand...
As a scientist, I find it irresponsible of AR officials to downplay the potential threat to people eating fish! Could it be that Drum fish (bottom feeders) consumed a concentrated amount of toxin or toxic bacteria compared to other fish? If Black birds ate them they too would be poisoned...To assume Mother Nature will clean the mess up is simply stupid. Any animal that eats these fish will be at risk for becoming ill or a carrier of disease. The mess is "too big"??? Clean it up. AR citizens should be outraged--elections are coming, remember who and what they care about!
"aninals?" REALLY? She (Kathy) sounds like she knows what shes talking about....whats your excuse for not having an actual valid argument ? Mud slinging is not a sign of intelligence and I find it funny that somehow 5 people agreed with your statement ~ You must be FROM Arkansas...or maybe Kentucky LOL
I salute you, good women and men of the Arkansas Game and Fish or DNR, whatever your agency is called. You are going to earn every penny this week, between the fish, the birds and the tornado. I hope the rest of 2011 goes much better for you.
Dead Birds, Dead Fish, disease? coincidence? ok to eat other fish from the same river? Elect a President from this state like Huckabee...see how the people do...
And where is Mr Environmental President Obama??????
This is scary and very disappointing. Sorta reminds me of when the nerve gas got loose in Dugway UT and killed all the sheep. Or Donora, PA or London "fog".
Saw a show called Rise of the Jellyfish. Very scary...ruining the ocean by feeding poison from all the rivers like the Missisippi for example. Will it take a genuine plague to get the public's attention on the environment? Animals first but people could be next.
Richard, please let us know what state you live in and all of your physical attributes, including the color of your skin, eyes and hair, so that we can make a generalization about people who look like you or live where you do. Not everybody in the state of Arkansas is a moron. Mike Huckabee (R) is not currently acting in the Arkansas government. The governor is currently Mike Beebe (D).
This is absolutely not currently the responsibility of the federal government, so please keep Obama's nose out of it. We have way too much of the Fed usurping state government responsibilities already. Instead, the Fed should simply be asking the question "what's going on?" and preparing to deal with a potentially more widespread disaster.
I agree that something's not right with this ecological mystery and somebody is either being underhanded or completely ignorant. But that is no reason to make broad generalizations about the people living in Arkansas.
5000 dead birds! 100000 dead fish! Both in or near Arkansas River. Officially there is no connection? They said themselves they don't have any tests back, but there is no connection! There's no connection between their necks and their heads either! When I hear about massive amounts of dead fish, I look for the paper mill.
Guess what I found? One of the largest paper mills in America. Guess what Fox News is going to help bury in the next week?
A coincidence followed by a coincidence, followed by another coincidence is never a coincidence.
And are predominately Christian! Very well educated Christians.
And BOTH Parties protect their real Masters, Big Business, starting with the Banking Cartels. Are you Righty/Lefty folks so blinded by Partisanship you cannot see the obvious?
Follow the Money.
As far as the fish and birds go, independent tests must be performed to verify cause of death.
Just saw a report indicating preliminary test show blunt trauma to internal organs as likely cause of death, yet the exteriors of the birds were not mauled.
Sounds like some sort of concussive effect. Bizarre.
Lord knows I love a good misleading statistic. I love the one where the wealthiest American's pay more in taxes. Actually they pay less percentage wise. For example (For all those home schooled out there), Warren Buffet payed 17.7% of his 52 billion dollar income, and his secretary paid 30% of her 60,000 dollar income. Let me put this together for you. When you make more income, you pay more in taxes.
Now, are home schooled children better at tests? No. Home schooled children's test scores are not being averaged into the scores of children attending ghetto schools and rural communities in places like Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and my personal favorite Oklahoma. This in no way implies that the small percentage of home schooled children in this nation are better educated than a child receiving a normal public education in an acceptable public facility.
As to the question of jealousy, my children attend private schools and are in the top 2% intellectually in the United States. My husband is in the top 1 percentile and did attend public schools. Did you get that Darthdon, or should I use smaller words?
By the way, General Electric was responsible for the grooming and rise of your favorite President Ronald Reagan. So I'm really not sure where you're going with that.
Big business is big business. On this point I agree. I don't care for Rachel Maddow or Bill O'Reilly as they don't speak the truth if it damages their political causes.
If you could refresh my memory though, I don't remember when MSNBC defended General Electric. I believe Keith Olbermann actually criticized them a number of times in the past.
The Papermill is 150 miles upstream from the dead fish. And the birds also about 150 miles away from the fish kill. And the birds are about 100 miles north of the paper mill. None of the three are close to the others! Just Sayin,
This may indeed be a direct result from hydraulic fracturing. There is a new documentary that is out in stores now. "Gas Land".
Halibuton is drilling all acroos the United States. It appears that everywhere they drill animals turn up dead, the water becomes tainted with no oversight from our wonderful men and women at the EPA. The EPA says that all 1,000+ chemicals ( I have not check the facts on the amount of chemicals used, this is what I was told) used in hydraulic fracturing is safe, yet when people turn their faucets on you can light the water coming directly out of the faucets with a simple cigarette lighter (You can see this on youtube).
Very sad how corruption is in all facists of our Government, Supreme Court, EPA, etc...(Turning a blind eye for profit).
Fracking..... thats all I have to say Hydraulic fracturing dont look any further.
What the heck is that?
Horizontal drilling, or something like that?
BP did it, no doubt. They also bombed Pearl Harbor and caused the French Revolution.
Why no mention of man-made global warming as a possible cause? Isn't that pretty much standard practice on any sort of natural disaster these days?
Poor BP. Are those mean old fishermen still picking on them for poisoning the water. I just hope BP is able to find some lawyers and money to sue those bad Americans.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Hydraulic+fracturing&l=1
Hmm, 2,000 birds fall from the sky, 100,000 fish die, what the heck is going on in Ark.? Now, if it were Nevada I would understand, but Arkansas...
Wow, and they say the world will end soon, makes me wonder .... LOL LOL LOL
Hey, Duh, answer this: why only specific species of birds and fish? If it's gobal warming (which it ain't), the deaths would be across the board in all species of birds and fish, not just redwinged blackbirds and drum fish. Ditto for fracking, it would affect all species, not just two.

This is too weird for words.
Sarcasm, meet Smokeysmom. Smokeysmom, sarcasm. Have fun you two
I just want to know who is going to be cleaning up all the dead birds and raccoons after they eat the dead fish and die.
If it's a disease, can we please spread it everywhere? I hate catching dumb drum.
Fracking may well be a cause of some, possibly many problems. It is unlikely to have killed only one species of fish.
It's Bill Clinton's fault, he's from there and Obama was in Hawaii.

Oh, this is good.....Humans calling fish and other wild animals dumb.......
Who's crying, whining & b!tching about nuclear weapons? The fish and animals? At least animals don't know what may kill them.
Humans test, develop and deployed what will ultimately destroy us all. So much for dumb drum.
"Horizontal drilling"
"It's Bill Clinton's fault,"
Fellow 'viners, I think we're onto something here!
I keep waiting for the headline: 100,000 PEOPLE dead in Arkansas!
100,000 fish, 5,000 birds die and eye brows are being raised. When people in the area start getting sick mysteriously they are going to raise hell.
The poultry industry has been poluting that river for years. Waste tends to sink to the bottom of the river where these fish feed.
Huckabee is being punished for blasphemy against God's plan to evolve life on earth.
jwhite: "I keep waiting for the headline: 100,000 PEOPLE dead in Arkansas!"
...and that would be worthy of a news headline why?
Sirst birds and now fish. Hmmm. Does the government know what is going on???? Certainly not coincidence and certainly not natural!!!!
Fracking is when you pump usually diesel and other CRAP into deep wells in order to build up pressure so that more oil comes to the surface. Look it up... It basically means that you poison ground water so that your company can make more money.
Look no further...investigate already...
yes some species are more sensitive than others and may be in direct proximity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_Nuclear_One
why gee Jed theres a nuke plant down the road...but Homer I didn't hear any sireeeens...well it was only a little discharge...
Because I have dear friends in Arkansas. :(
It would be a headline... for me.
Fracking does not pump diesel into a well head. Give me a break. They pump water down.
Are those little seizures you are having with your periods?
LOL
At least she isn't 'YELLING".
Deb,
You express genuine concerns in this day and age. Not saying this is a cover up, just saying it could be.
Peace
And how do you know their not? It seems you have a lot of heresay from a small article. Just because no one is saying anything you want to hear, doesn't mean nothing is going on behind the scenes. Calm down, take a breath and see what happens.
As an environmental scientist I can assure you there's a lot going on that for good reason they're not ready to report out on. Chill. It's coming.
It'll be OK Deb, just put your tinfoil hat back on, click your heels three times and you'll be magically whisked away to the closet. Unless of course the 'Boogie Man' lives in the closet then I guess your just screwed like the rest of us.
the apocalypse is here just face it
@scott wouldn't it be cool if the apocalypse really was here... and we knew it in advance?
That would just stink. I mean, I JUST bought the car of my dreams. All this saving and wham, gone in a flash! What is my insurance company gonna say?
Just one word, methane. It rises out of water and settles in the upper atmosphere and there it remains until it freezes.
oops lose, loose, you get the point, I hope.
Dredge999,
http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2010/02/19/19greenwire-two-oil-field-companies-acknowledge-fracking-w-90863.html
Come again?
"Look no further...investigate already..."
So which is it, investigate or not? LOL!
I wonder what the long term effects would be on humans in the area?
blondeness 032
interesting thought.........but why only one species of bird and fish when so many others live in the area of the occurrence?
specific species.................more like targeting.
and why are the wild life people so sure that all other fish are OK to fish and eat?
this is too weird for a simple......oh they ran into each other in mid air answer..............won't be surprised if this happens else where............testing is usually done in different environments.
What an unusual coincidence.
I'v always said, timing is everything...
There is no such thing as coincidence, only cause and effect. Where anything happens, there must be a cause.p>
dragonmaster, please show me how you know there is no such thing as coincidence? I'm curious?
What the heck is going on in Arkansas? First birds, now fish......
Actually it was the fish first.
Maybe the birds ate them as part of the "cleanup effort" and this is the result. Next we will see mass raccoon dyings, etc.....
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. The birds eat the fish, they fall out of the sky dead. Raccoons and other animals that eat the fish and the birds - will they die too?
What the hell is going on?
Maybe God hates Arkansas
I fully expect to read next week about 20,000 toothless hillbillies found dead across the state, a pile of raccoon bones next to each.
G_Reaper. Thanks for the laugh.
BJs65..my thoughts too. Great policy they have in place. Duh.
GReaper: LMAO!!!! Thanks for the laugh!
Hey c'mon now... why all the hate for Arkies? You know they invented the toothbrush right? If it had been invented anywhere else it'd be called a teethbrush.
Flatlanders are like the drum, they are bottom feeders too....
I don't care who you are, that's damn funny! Bless the little pigmy's in New Guinea!
Z1P2's post that is.
You, do realize that the Ozark Mountains run through Arkansas, right? Hillbilly it is, but flat it ain't. They don't call them hillbillies because there are no hills around, y'know.
G_Reaps - you 2 funny with that. Good one. The best post in some time - and may come true! I'm laughing typing this shid.
Gotta go pay the rent now cause I'm late. But WTF, they give ya til the 3rd, b4 jacking up the incentive to pay right away.
As that army lady said.... the end is near.... RIP!!!!!
I was referring to those ignorant Arkie bashing flatlanders that think their little flat world holds the true meaning of rational thought.
The little flatlanders with their little minds that belittle others so that they may lay claim to superiority....
I have a firm grasp of the obvious, including where the Ozark hills are located....
the most worrying thing about this story is the governments reluctance to clean up the dead fish. i like how they kinda tucked in there that there were other types of fish that where in the mix as well which to me kinda rules out the whole disease theory. if it was an epidemic within the drum fish poulation it would have been 100% drum fish. the pure and simple fact is what are they so worried about that they wont go near the site save to gather a few specimens for study. if they ever actually even did that. they said it would take a month to study the fish, more like a month to sweep it out of everyones minds. did anyone watch the video accompaning the bird story/ did anyone notice the government worker 9dont know if it was epa or game and fish) dressed in full out hazmat gear? the guy even had a gas mask on. the video of clean up on cnn showed the locals and they wore nothing more than work gloves.
Hey, if Arkansas goes under, you'll all be sorry. I mean where ya gonna get yer moonshine?
Carolyn,
We'll still have KY, TN, VA, WV, GA, AL, NC, and SC to get our moonshine. Did I forget any?
Undoubtedly.
Mississippi, Ohio, Indiana perhaps?
But you got the main ones!
Clinton Country that's what happened. pick a reason. we will never know the truth, more than likely
Umm, I'm not a religious person but isn't this in the book of Revelations...that the fish die?
something about the seas turning red
May 21 is the latest prediction for the end of days according to Harold Camping of the Oakland, California based Family Radio Worldwide.
Pretty soon dogs and cats will start living together...:-)
Seas turning red already happened - that oil in the Gulf sure looked red in some areas.
Boo hiss - the ends of times is on us! Repent y'all!
I somehow think that the description of fish dying in Revelation isn't limited to Arkansas. Now, if you hear about this happening world-wide, I'd advise you go straight out and buy a Bible.
Revelations? That would be worldwide not a dot on the earth. Hydraulic fracturing? No that is not it either. How about bi-product dumping in streams http://a4gda.blogspot.com/2010/08/dumping-in-streamsyeahits-happeningup.html
Red algae blooms have been making the seas turn red for eons. If the entire ocean turns red, then I'll take notice.
The oil in the gulf was brown... if you thought it was red you need to have your eyes checked.
Fish, trees, people...everything dies eventually.
No....that was in the horror movie WARLOCK, The Armageddon, where the fish died.
Ps..... Fish die all the time in groups... This is NOT New....
Just the fact that it happen at the same time as the birds makes this unusual..
But both can be explained...
And the big bad woof huffed and puffed and blew the house down, you believe that crap too?
5000 birds hit a massive invisible window in the sky? I don't think so. It was poison that destroyed their organs.
Nor would I expect any internal trauma with any creature that fell a few hundred feet and landed on blacktop.
The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!
Good point stand up, speak out... the fall explains the trauma quite well.
I dont know, but one would think they would be more concerned for the clean-up since they dont yet know what caused them.
Blackbirds don't eat dead fish.
Hello, McFly! Blackbirds don't eat fish or any other type of meat! C'mon people, put on your thinking caps before you run amuck!
In addition to having very different diets, the birds were 125 miles away... much too far away to have been near the fish the day before.
All birds are scavengers they eat everything
Uh, no they don't guito. Seriously... how are you able to be old enough to type and yet you don't know that already??
Both birds and fish eat insects.
I believe the preliminary studied indicate that the birds suffered some kind of trauma. So, I guess we will just have to wait for awhile. In any event tis a puzzlement
The dying fish slapped the birds to death.
Birds can cover a lot of ground in a day. Probably 125 miles. Can you prove differently or are you just spouting crap?
Drum are bottom-feeders, if insects were a vector then bass would have died in vast numbers rather than drum.
How about this... we know differently, but we don't care what stupid people think.
thousands of dead fish and birds...i think i'd move a few states over
that might be wise, until they find out what happened. No sense being the next victims.....
The end is neigh
Only if you are a horse.
LOL Mimi!
Oh Willber
Oh elmer's (glue that is)
All of you are just so funny-Thanks for the morning giggles!!!
People of Arkansas, Long John Silver will be having a special on drum fish, this week only, so run to get your fried drum fish special!
to josh strike: so far yours is the only comment that makes perfect sense. look for some kind of toxic emmission release of benzene, atrocine toxic sludge with mercury or lead, arsenic. they need to close the river to fishing and take precautions. why should the raccoons and other birds have to die too, clean up the fish if you are not sure what cause the massive die-off. i don't believe this is from disease, that is what the "official" said about the birds too. B.S.
Not too sure that blackbirds are fish or any other type of meat eaters. Nice try though!
That is the way the DBO of Arkansas think. Most fish will just rot away. Kind of like Salmon after they breed.
Lets wait and see how many people get sick or die from this. May be none may be a few thousand.
Probably some toxic waste dumped illegally into the river violating the "good for nothing" EPA regulations!
"are they morons?" Duh, yeah.
Morons.
Despite the obvious fallacies in the rest of your post... this bit is absolutely hillarious... If every raccoon in arkansas carried a deadly disease, then... well then things would be just as they already are because every raccoon in Ark. already carries rabies. But it's incredibly rare for anyone to get bit by raccoons... unless of course, you're this guy (and I hesitate to even call him a guy):
http://blogs.app.com/saywhat/2009/01/26/raccoon-bites-off-mans-manhood-in-rape-attack/
" the ones that died don't eat fish. But the fact that drum fish are bottom-feeders lends itself to your argument about toxic sludge"
Except the catfish are OK.
OK, Josh, tell you what--Why don't you go there and stop all those raccoons from eating the fish, then get back to us, 'kay? If you have any fingers left, that is!
As Bugs Bunny used to say, "What a maroon!"
Josh, Thanks for posting an intelligent comment, as they are far and few between. One can only hope that authorities could be so smart.
Josh that was my first thought when I read the article.
Those bird that died don't eat fish.
We better put up signs telling the racoons not to eat those fish right away, maybe a warning sticker on nearby trees for the birds as well.
Red-winged blackbirds don't eat fish.
Really I understand it may be quite an extensive job to clean up but if they are uncertain as to what killed them why allow the other animals to "clean it up" now if all the little forest animals start dissappearing we will know why and who is going to clean that up?????????????/
svopilot-only in California do you have to warn the natives about eating, drinking, breathing and pumping your own gas, LOL!
If UFOs ever where proved/admitted by the Governments, God would become an obsolete myth, so don't expect that to happen either.
Look if it was poison or contamination all species would die. Not just drum. It is a disease plain and simple. This occurs more often than most people know. The sheer size is alarming, but drum are carp and they reproduce pretty heavily.
These weren't red-winged blackbirds.
Nicole, please. This is a forum for supposed intelligent discussion. Enough with the text talk.
Yeah Nicole u r using 2 much of the txt type talk. OMG!
Yet we still let Stand up, speak out write comments. LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!
ef you
Nice reply. I must however, decline your most gracious offer.
Well, I excpect to be banned once again. Thank you.
No, not you. Why would anyone ban you. Besides I don't report people for those kind of things. Unless it makes me laugh so hard hot coffee comes out my nose. In which case I might out of anger for making me laugh at an inappropriate time. LOL!
Well Jimmy, can we consider ourselves pals then?
Might as well, but you know we are still gonna be on different sides often. Just let it be known that no matter how much we disagree, we can agree to be friends. NOW, let the games begin!
DING!
(the sound of a ring bell)
Lol!
SUSO, notsojingo, and Jimmy the Goon, Pals then, right? Me and jingo are typically are going to disagree with you thought, right, Goon?
Chronological presentation of the recent fish and bird kills
That would be correct Stand up, you guys are not going to like what I say, but we are going to treat each other with as much respect and dignity as possible while defending our points of view. I like the way that sounds. I am okay with being proven wrong. I have been wrong for almost eleven years now on a daily basis and I don't believe that I will ever divorce my beautiful wife, so that is not going to change.
I feel your Pain! ROFLMAO!!
Quick where is my Bible? I need to start Thumping it! Someone help me look for it!!!!!
The Lawd is comin'! Quick! Everyone look busy!
When you find it, try reading it.
Why?
I don't know, maybe because he thinks these are events that point toward the end of time described in the Bible. Just a shot in the dark, but I bet I am pretty close.
hey arkansas, why are you going to let other animals feed on tainted food that could kill them or start another epidemic?
I don't believe you have an idea about how big this river is and how many fish 80-100k would be. I have a home in southeastern Oklahoma and I know those rivers.
If it was a pollutant all fish would be dead. Not just drums.
There is something "Deliverancish" about some of your wild suppositions. Shaking head.
there's something man made, causing this carnage, and they kn ow what it is. the problem?they think the pub lic is ignorant!
who or what is next?
"they think the pub lic is ignorant!"
yes, that's why they went to Arkansas. Next it will be Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, ...
Why no mention of man-made global warming as a possible cause? Isn't that pretty much standard practice on any sort of natural disaster these days?
UFO
yep
Borrowing the words of REM, "It's the end of the world as we know it"!
...and I feel fine!
Then watch out for what will come in Texas as there were some BIG lies that came outta that guy that came outta Texas!
Nice try.
Are we talking about lies from public figures, or is retribution in store for the lies of private citizens? Because there's not a state safe from dead birds and fish if that's the case!
The Beev, idiot!
According to the article, drum fish are the only species affected. It's a fish STD, someone's New Year's Party got a little bit out of hand.
Where was Todd Rungren when all this went down?
There must be something in the water...first fish now birds?
Then why only certain species.
As Conservative Republicans continue to destroy God's creation, the wrath of nature will be your undoing.
I'll give you 'two thumbs up' for the idiotic statement of the day!
You're welcome!
So linda, I guess you are a liberal
I have to assume that you do not have any plastics or chemicals in your home and you do not drive a car or ride a bicycle and you live in a sod hut with no electricity and use a outhouse.
So, therefore you are not a part of the problem
Geeze, Linda, take your political obsessions over to the politics section, please?!
Linda is right. Conservaties have a well known bias against protecting the enviornment. Seriously.
daphne - See john's post # 16.4 above. Insert your name in place of Linda's. Seriously.
Such astute observations/argumental asides. Just because it is there doesn't make it right, like sin.
Golly.
to presume this is "disease" and not toxic pollution is criminal. i think the "officials" are lying like rugs. and of course the cooperative, colluding, collaborating news media just buys it, hook line and sinker. investigate thouroughly msnbc if you have any morals left at all!
hook, line and sinker - is that some kind of pun?
A scientist? Really? What field? Obviously nothing that has to do with botany, aninals, or fish.....
Just haters with nothing to add.
I salute you, good women and men of the Arkansas Game and Fish or DNR, whatever your agency is called. You are going to earn every penny this week, between the fish, the birds and the tornado. I hope the rest of 2011 goes much better for you.
How can they say it's safe to eat the fish when they haven't figured out yet what it was that killed all of the drum fish? Not wise people.
Bama has a tee time he needs to make. Check with him after his next vacation in Tahiti.
Jeanette - grow up honey.
As you Repubs always screech - STATE RIGHTS FIRST.
Let Arkansas deal with the problem.
Didn't we already elect a president from this state? Of course he was too interested in Bimbos to take a lot of vacations!
what does that have to do with this problem???
Finally!.... an intelligent response!
Only at their convenience.
100,000 dead fish spontaneously dying? 5000 birds dropping dead from the sky? Anyone else seen the movie the Seventh Sign?
5000 dead birds! 100000 dead fish! Both in or near Arkansas River. Officially there is no connection? They said themselves they don't have any tests back, but there is no connection! There's no connection between their necks and their heads either! When I hear about massive amounts of dead fish, I look for the paper mill.
Guess what I found? One of the largest paper mills in America. Guess what Fox News is going to help bury in the next week?
A coincidence followed by a coincidence, followed by another coincidence is never a coincidence.
What in the he11 does Fox News have to do with any part of this story? Get a grip (and an education).
Fox News is more than a little famous for protecting Big Business. I was hoping that everyone would be smart enough to pick up on that dig.
I'm sorry Elaine1, if my education came from a chalk board that didn't belong to Glenn Beck. Let me make one more guess. You're home schooled?
BitOfJules
What, jealous? Home schooled students, on average, do better on tests and in college than those from the public schools.
And MSNBC is more than a little famous for protecting General Electric.
"General Electric was responsible for the grooming and rise of your favorite President Ronald Reagan"
Your point being? Protecting Big Business is protecting Big Business, whether you've got Bill O'Reilly or Rachel Maddow on screen.
Did anyone notice none of them had their eyes?
Picked out by redwing blackbirds, perhaps?
The Papermill is 150 miles upstream from the dead fish. And the birds also about 150 miles away from the fish kill. And the birds are about 100 miles north of the paper mill. None of the three are close to the others! Just Sayin,
Look at a map already even.
Sounds like the officials are playing CYA instead of investigating a dual disaster... OY!
It's inconveniently happening near a toxic waste dump, too. Oh, no... so it must have natural causes.
Facists are generally known for their corruption...We need to quit electing Facists! LOL!
