Well it does not need to be "the way it is". This is a sad tale of humanity. I just cannot believe the words on the page of this article. Humans are obviously not going to be happy until we wipe out many endangered species. Elephant are highly intelligent and family oriented. I don't know if I am doing the right thing, but I am writing World Wildlife Fund and asking them to be an accelerated effort to this cause and I am contributing some dollars their way. While I find the slaughter of these majestic animals reprehensible, I find the comments about the Thai people, even more reprehensible.

It is easy to castigate a people, when you know nothing about them.

Well - the bottom line is there are far too many of us - 7 billion now..? Overpopulation in the worst way. The elephants, the polar bears, tigers, rhinoceros, wolves, buffalo - they are all not going to make it into the next century except as a few living museum pieces in zoos...

The best thing that can happen to this planet and its millions of species is a virulent worldwide fast acting disease that significantly reduces our population - to less 1 billion.

All this railing against other countries from citizens of a country literally BUILT on the backs of legalized slave labor. A country supposedly founded on equality yet one that didn't even think women should vote until the 1920s, or that black people should have full equality until the 1950s. I love America, but Americans are spectacularly sanctimonious at times. And yes, Americans have abused plenty of animals, so we're not blameless in that realm either.

Yes, it's stupid to think that an elephant's penis or a tiger's penis would have any effect on one's sexual prowess, but no more or less stupid than the blizzard of insane religious beliefs practiced right here in the US... like the notion that consuming the flesh and blood of a dead Jew will get you a ticket to eternal peace and happiness.

Elephants, Rhino are all endangered; slaughtered for sexual organs, to help old men get laid; maybe the Mayan calender is correct , the world will end in 2012, maybe next time a more intelligent species will emerge.

No, these people do NOT live in mansions, thats exactly WHY selling one's daughter (who, in other cultures, are worth far less than sons...and actually COST parents money to have ie: dowrys, etc) is a viable source of income for some very poor families.

Maybe YOU should do some research yourself. I've spent plenty of time in Thailand and the people are largely wonderful. I have numerous female friends there, some are "working girls", some are not. Most of the working girls are doing it to feed their children who were abandoned by their fathers. Their only alternative to sex work is breaking their backs farming rice in the eastern provinces - for about a dollar a day.

I have never known or heard of a family sending their child to solicit sex in Thailand. I'm sure it happens, but to generalize it as a regular occurence is completely misguided.

the cost of a legal hunt in Kenya is 150,000.00 and that is just the permit another 50,000.00 for the tag . Thats not exactly true,a lot of those regions have better enviromental laws than we do. Their real problem is having to combat age old customs and superstitions that still thrive in the rural regions where these animals live. India is a prime example of the effectiveness of wildlife preservation efforts in such regions,their tiger reserves are the only thing standing in the way of that cat going to the dusts of time and they have done an exemplary job of staving off their extinction...yet their biggest threat are the native peoples living in and around the reserves,who poach tigers for hides and trinkets and for ceremonial beliefs.

Theres no doubt of that...a documentary was filmed back in the 60's of a pigmy Elephant hunt...it involved the entire village,women, children and the men who actually stalked and arrowed/speared the Elephant. After they speared it they tracked that Elephant for four or five days. When they finally caught up to it and subdued it, they set up camp beside it and by the time they were done butchering it over the course of several more days there wasn't enough waste left to feed the buzzards and the jackals. It was an incredible film and a purely unbiased insight to subsistance hunting that was worth the watching for sure.

I agree with you on the point that if they were raised to be eaten as cows, etc. we Americans would probably be ok with that. If this was the reason they were being killed I could understand that also but the article doesn't mention anything about the whole animal being eaten for food. This I can not understand. This is a very sad story to think that we as humans are the only animals on earth that can destroy or save the animals and this planet we live on if we so choose. Sadly some of us choose to wipe out endangered species before their time, we destroy the planet by littering, cutting down trees, killing endangered animals and killing each other plus so many other things.
